B-6-2- Incoterms prior to 2010
Modern-day Incoterms, date back to the creation of the first FOB term in 1812.
In 1895, CIF Term was created.
In 1919, the EUA (European Union Emission Trading Scheme) created its own terms.
The Incoterms were created in 1936 by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). At that time, the ICC published for the first time, the International Rules for the Interpretation of trade Terms (Incoterms).
The additions that followed resulted in the ICC creating the next version, the 1953 Incoterms. Further modifications took place in 1967 and in 1976.
In 1976, the ICC created new Incoterms, which included air transportation. This type of transportation had not yet been stipulated in previous texts.
The International Chamber of Commerce, ICC, replaced FOA (Fob Airport, which became the FCA), which introduce risk transfer between the exporter and the importer.
This risk transfer occurs as soon as the carrier takes charge the goods, as opposed to upon transport.
This new concept is essential if you want to understand the new Incoterms.
To avoid creating additional Incoterms to address air transportation, the ICC adopted three new Incoterms applicable to all modes of transportation.
At the same time, the emergence of containerization within transport necessitated ICC modification of old Incoterms.
The 1980 Incoterms were then created.
Incoterms are ever-evolving.
In 1980 there were 14 Incoterms that lacked simplicty, thus they were not as commonly used as they are today.
6-2-1- The Incoterms in 1990
In 1990 new Incoterms were created to suit intermodal transport.
The Incoterms numbered 13 with publication N° 460.
From this point, the FOR (free On Rail), FOT (Free On Trail) and FOA (Free On Airport) were no longer used.
EXW, FCA, FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF, CPT, CIP, DAF, DES, DEQ, DDU and DDP
6-2-2- The Incoterms in 2000
In 2000, the ICC made a simplification in the allocation of loading and unloading costs.
They are now 13. The ICC has improved the distribution of the responsibilities during customs clearance.
6-2-3- The Incoterms in 2010
In 2010, the number of Incoterms decreased to 11.
These incoterms were put into effect January 1, 2011.
The latest changes removed four Incoterms (DAF, DEQ, DES, DDU) while creating two new Incoterms: DAT (Delivery At Terminal) and DAP (Delivery At Place).
EXW, FCA, FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF, CPT, CIP, DAT, DAP and DDP
